Reading Inventory and proposal
The way we read shapes the way we write. They are integrally connected. If we think about it some of our greatest teachers have been things we've read. In fact, all of our teachers, we have read in some way. If I think about it, we are constantly learning and adapting our beliefs based on information we have read. People, TV, Movies, and Books have taught us about ourselves and shaped the persons we have become.
From my mother I learned patience and how to act in a way that would be loving and kind. I define those words by the example of constantly having read her throughout my life. I learned diversity and acceptance from Sesame Street. I wanted to believe the beautiful urban fairy tale of multiculturalism could actually exist, even long after I realized there was no Snuffalupugus. I read the television, the messages they were telling me and based my life on living up to Sesame Street standards. (Not as much as my sister (who in her late 30's) told Bob she loved him when he sang "Everyone Asked About You" to us and our kids. I teased her, she said, "you don't understand I really do love him:)" I think perhaps, besides making Bob feel like a rock star, she had a point. She loved what she read in him and felt true emotion because she had "Read" Sesame Street and based her life off of that message. I learned about the under-dog from movies like "Goonies" and "Stand by Me," and read them to say, we should always appreciate the struggle of the underdog, and compassion was necessary. But the topic that had the greatest diversity of lessons definitely was the novels that shaped my life, and therefore formed me as a reader and writer.
